The shell middens were mapped using satellite image georeferencing, and dated by 14 C or ceramic shards found in the shell layers. Successive shorelines emplaced between and years B. Low salinity in the embayment created environmental conditions particularly favourable to the biological cycle of Anadara , exploited by the Neolithic populations. Geomorphological and sedimentological approaches are adopted in order to identify beach ridges, berms, Zostera mats and surge drift lines. The palaeomorphological changes induced by littoral drift and aeolian transport are consistent with the progressive closure of the Oued ech Chibka embayment. The morphological evolution and the presence of Ras el Sass, Jerf el Oustani and Jerf Sghir islands constrain the development of wave fronts in the embayment. Coastal processes have formed a series of beach ridges and tombolos on the leeward side of the islands. Sediment forcing is clearly at the origin of the infilling pattern. Not far from our Tasiast gold mine are rich finds of another kind; buried cultural treasures, including stone tools and tombs dating as far back as 9, ago that our Tasiast team is helping to preserve and protect. To the untrained eye, the archeological sites scattered amongst the stubby shrubs and dunes of the Mauritanian desert are hard to identify, but they are testaments to a once well-inhabited region. Archeologists suspect the Sahel was once lush and green before desertification crept across the land about 4, years, pushing human settlement out with it.
The former inhabitants however, left behind a rich trove for archaeologists to study and document. Some of the sites that have been discovered include Neolithic occupation and burial sites, thought to be approximately 2, — 9, years old. Among the found artifacts are stone tools projectile points, knives, awls, scrapers, polished axes and waste flakes , milling stones for grinding or crushing food, broken pottery, some of it decorated, and fragments of eroded, bleached-white animal and human bones.

If at the outset the fisheries sector and development cooperation played a central role in the bilateral agenda, over the years these relationships have been extended to other areas. These days, the promotion of closer and more complete economic and commercial relations, and personal and cultural exchanges between the two societies, are also priorities. Additionally, in a context marked by regional instability, a close collaborative response to common challenges such as irregular immigration, illicit trafficking or the fight against terrorism, has enabled the development of an exemplary bilateral cooperation which has achieved excellent results.
The human ties are a fundamental and increasingly significant element. In , more than 6, Mauritanians travelled to our country, with the Canary Islands being their main destination. Improved connectivity currently, three airlines offer direct flights between Mauritania and the Canary Islands is helping to reinforce the proximity. The excellent institutional relations between the Governments of Spain and the Canary Islands with the Government of Mauritania, the outstanding economic presence of the Canary Islands – it has the highest level of exports to Mauritania of any Spanish Autonomous Community- and a growing interest in cultural and academic exchanges contribute decisively to this.

15 August 2008: Is a Military Coup an Answer to the Political Crisis in Mauritania?
The Central Sahel region Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger is facing a severe humanitarian and protection crisis, pushing millions of people to flee their homes. Indiscriminate attacks by armed groups against civilians, summary executions of men, widespread use of rape against women, as well as attacks on State institutions, including schools and health facilities, are the latest drivers of displacement impacting a region already struggling with climate change, extreme poverty, a lack of economic opportunities and scarce basic services.

The design is of the conservative type common before the 20th century and still used by such nations as Turkey , the Comoros , Tunisia , and the individual states of the United Arab Emirates. In many Arab countries, however, this type of design has been replaced by flags of more modern form, such as those based on the Arab Revolt Flag of and the Arab Liberation Flag of , containing the four colours of traditional Arab dynasties red, white, black, and green in a tricolour form with either a triangle at the hoist or an emblem in the centre.

Islamists have become an important political force in Mauritania since formal Islamist associations first emerged in the s. Islamist activism has contributed to the ongoing Islamization of Mauritanian society, as is evident from the proliferation of mosques and Islamic associations in the capital, Nouakchott, and elsewhere.
Overall, Mauritanian Islamism does not currently pose a threat to the United States. The mainstream of the movement appears committed to democracy and, even so, is unlikely to take power. Islamist parties like Tewassoul have never captured a large share of the vote in elections, and moderate Islamist leaders have explicitly rejected using violence to take over the state.
Kidnappings of Westerners and embassy bombings have made Mauritania, along with the broader Sahel region, a source of concern for American and European governments worried about the potential spread of transnational terrorist movements in Africa. The strength of Mauritanian Islamism contributes to such fears. Nevertheless, Mauritanian Islamist organizations do not currently threaten the United States. The mainstream Islamist movement appears committed to democracy and is unlikely to capture power, whether violently or at the ballot box.
Washington should also be interested in Mauritanian Islamists for what they can reveal about anti-Western sentiments within an energetic and influential segment of society primarily composed of young, educated, urban activists.
Mauritania: Enslaving Africans in Africa in 2012
Slavery is still a very topical issue in Mauritania with the latest official abolition of slavery dating back to and more recently the Mauritanian National Assembly adopting, on August 8th, , a law criminalizing the slavery. The aim of this paper is to analyse the role of migrants on the emancipation of groups of servile origin. After a brief presentation of the essential discriminations that the descendants of slaves are facing today, I will focus on the various kinds of resistance that these forms of discrimination produce.
In this perspective, I will show how the political action of subordinate groups reveals the influence of international actors in local political arenas. Hence, international migrants not only support financially the political goals of social movements, but they also influence the local political imagination by introducing new ideas and strategies.
Thus, an increasing number of subordinate groups have been to claim an equal share of political power in the name of the principles of equality, dignity and individual competence.

Mauritania’s former desert jewel, forgotten and fading
Despite cosmetic democratization and a lessening of government-instigated violence in , Mauritania retains all the apparatus of a repressive state with a disregard for basic human rights. In January, Mauritania held its first multiparty elections, which resulted in the re-election of President Maaouya Ould Sid’Ahmed Taya, but the elections were marred by serious irregularities and fraud. The new government, which is virtually identical to its predecessor, continues to be responsible for human rights abuses, particularly in the areas inhabited by the black populations along the Senegal River Valley.
The dramatic abuses associated with the mass deportations of , during which tens of thousands of blacks were summarily expelled, and the massacre of November January , in which at least black political prisoners were executed or tortured to death, have been replaced by a more chronic and insidious pattern of violations, principally against the black population of southern Mauritania.
